Adel Public Library

May is finally here at the Adel Public Library. We are busy collecting donations for our monthly Garage Sales which happen during the last weekend of each month from May through October. Donations can be dropped off at the library during regular hours. Our first Garage Sale of the summer is Friday, May 30 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 31 from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to planning our garage sales, we are also preparing for the annual Book Sale which always happens during Adel’s Sweet Corn Festival in August. We are eagerly sorting and organizing books, and will happily take any book donations. All proceeds from the Garage Sales and Book Sale are used by the Friends of the Adel Public Library Foundation for special projects and programs at your library. To prepare for these events, and elect new officers, our annual meeting of the Friends Foundation will be on Monday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. The next gathering of the Brown Bag Book Club is at noon on Thursday, May 8 when we’ll be discussing the novel Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. Take your lunch break at the library and come share your love of books with us. Our next Classic Movie Monday on the big screen will be on Monday, May 12 at 2 p.m. We’re happy to watch the charming 1994 remake of the movie “Little Women” starring Susan Sarandon, Wynona Ryder, Claire Danes, and Christian Bale.

The ever popular Rod Stanley will return to the library to present Bonnie & Clyde … the Rest of the Story on Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 pm. In May the Evening Book Club will be discussing the book “Buddha in the Attic” by Julie Otsuka on Thursday the 29 at 7 p.m. Our Fizz Boom Read Summer Reading Program starts in June and the library is excited to host Blank Park Zoo at our Kick off program in June. Last year almost 600 people participated in our programs and read 8,334 hours. Ms. Paula, Ms. Laura, and Mr. Trever are busily planning all kinds of exciting events and activities for each of the four age groups; babies, kids, teenagers, and adults. Sign-ups for all Summer Reading programs begin at the end of May. Our last Early Out Movie of the school year is on Wednesday, May 7 when we’ll be watching “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs II” on the big screen at 2 p.m. Have you ever needed a tool you really don’t want to buy, or hosted an event and wished you had just one more table? Our Stuff Shelf has an ever growing amount of stuff you can check out including; tools, cake pans, puzzles, LEGOS, a telescope, paintings, dishes, and so much more. Have you noticed our Nile Kinnick display in our vestibule honoring the Adel native? We’d like to find a vintage football to add to this display, and if you have one you’d be willing to donate, please be sure to let us know. Your library will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26th.
