Reading is Sweet! Our winter Family Reading Program is in full swing and we are having so much fun helping people beat the winter blues with great books. There is still time to sign-up your family and enter the contest for a chance to win some great prizes. This year’s Grand Prize is a one-night stay at the Ramada Tropics Resort in Urbandale which includes a room for four, and passes to their indoor water park. The Grand Finale of our program is our own version of Cupcake Wars! We’ll have all the ingredients you need to decorate your Cupcakes and enter them into the war on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. Stay tuned to www.adelpl.org for the announcement of our panel of Adel Celebrity Judges.

We have two fantastic events in February that are sure to be a great time:

On Tuesday, Feb. 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. we’ll be playing board games for all ages, including Bingo, Connect Four, Sorry!, Dominion, Settlers of Catan and many others. Then on Thursday, Feb. 20 we’re going to forget it is winter and have a Beach Party with fun summer themed games and smoothies.

In addition to our regular weekly activities we have four special kids’ events in February: Our Lego League is back and will gather together to build all kinds of creative things on Monday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. Miss Laura has added new Duplos and a Lego Table since the last time we met and we can’t wait to play.

The library will have two Early Out Movies for all school-aged children in February. On Wednesday, Feb. 5 we’ll be watching “Despicable Me” and on Wednesday, Feb. 26 we’ll watch “Despicable Me 2.” We watch the movies on our big screen at 2 p.m. and popcorn will be provided.

The Dallas County Library Association and 4 R Kids ECI are hosting a Dallas County Toddler Fest on Saturday, April 12. The goal of this festival is to raise awareness of literacy activities and resources available in Dallas County for 2-5-year-olds. We’ll have two hours of free activities dedicated to toddlers and their caregivers and each child will receive a free book just for attending the festival.

Our Book Clubs are always welcoming new people to our fun-filled discussions. The Brown Bag Book Club meets on Thursday, Feb.13 at noon to talk about “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir” by Des Moines, Iowa native Bill Bryson. The Evening Book Club will meet on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. to talk about the 2014 All Iowa Reads novel “Little Wolves” by Thomas Maltman. In April the library will be hosting our second annual ‘How To Festival’ on Saturday, April 5 and we are looking for local groups, business, or individuals who would be interested in teaching a short ‘how to’ class where people learn ‘how to’ do something new. We are still looking for fun, crafty or hobby classes and ideas. Contact Paula at Paula@adelpl.org if you have if you are interested in teaching a class at the festival. Have you ever needed a tool you really don’t want to buy, or hosted an event and wished you had just one more table? Our new Stuff Shelf has an ever growing amount of stuff you can check out including; tools, cake pans, puzzles, LEGOS, and so much more. Stop by the library and see what stuff you might need. Our first meeting of the Friends of the Adel Public Library Foundation is on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in conference room two to amend the bylaws and discuss upcoming events and expenses. Your library will be closed in observance of President’s Day on Monday, Feb. 17.
