Adel, Waukee police warn residents to take home safety precautions

A recent string of burglaries in West Des Moines have found residents victims of vehicular and residential burglaries. The West Des Moines Police Department has come to the conclusion that burglars are taking garage door openers from the targeted car as well as the address from vehicle registration or insurance in order to then break into the owner’s house. Although Adel has not experienced such crimes at this point, Adel Chief of Police Jim McNeill suggests taking caution.

“Consider keeping remote controllers out of view and securing registration and insurance.”

Waukee Police Department’s Lieutenant Troy Mapes also has some tips for residents even though Waukee has also not experienced any break-ins of this type.

“We suggest that homeowners keep their garage doors closed even when they are home. Keep an eye on the neighbors homes and garages and report any suspicious activity.”

Polk County Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) involved in this incident.
