The board of supervisors has made the necessary order for submitting the question of voting a tax of $45,000 for a new courthouse to the voters of the county at the next general election. This action we believe was unanimous. The amount proposed is smaller than has heretofore been asked, but it will be sufficient to erect a good building and one that will be a credit to the county.

110 YEARS AGO

The leans and the fats of Adel played a game of baseball at the fair ground Monday afternoon, the game resulting in a victory for the fat men by a score of 28 to 23. It was not the most exciting game of the season.

J.W. Russell has a peach tree at the rear of his office which is weighted down with fruit that is just beginning to turn. A good bull dog will probably be needed to save that fruit when it gets ripe.

35 YEARS AGO

Many Dallas County residential property owners are not pleased with what they are learning about their 1978 assessments. The assessed value of Dallas County homes is now 40 or 50 percent more than it was a year ago, as a result of more state pressure on local officials to make valuations closer to market value. The Dallas County Assessor’s Office has received 168 complaints about the assessments.

Congressman Jim Leach of Davenport will address Dallas County Republicans at their annual steak fry on Saturday at Pattee Park in Perry.

A state inspection of the Van Meter sewer, designed to serve 400 persons in 1964 and currently serving about 800, has indicated “excessive sewage,” according to an official from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The graduates of the Class of 1938 of the Dallas Center High School held their 50th class reunion last week. Three former teachers — Arla Holden Potter of Iowa City, Alice Huges Missildine of Columbus, Ohio, and Lorene Juhl Mortimer of Dallas Center — were guests of honor.

With or without voter approval of the funding mechanism, a new Dallas County Public Safety Center will be built in Adel. County Supervisors said the $2,002,725 building would be built even if voters turn down the referendum in the Nov. 6 election.
