A child weighing 18 pounds was born in Adams township last week. The child died and its parents brought the remains to McMullen’s gallery and had a negative taken. ***

Last Tuesday the Dallas County jail had six inmates. Wednesday it had only two, the other four getting too close to one of the windows sometime in the night and falling out. Persons confined in the jail should be more careful in the future or they may meet with a like fate.

The Democratic ‘mass’ convention was held in town last Friday. Like most of the mass conventions of that party, called to meet at the courthouse, it has been so small and ashamed of itself that it crept off into Mr. North’s office to transact its business. Judging from what we saw on the streets it is safe to say there were not 10 Democrats from out of town in attendance.

Last winter one of our teachers swept the school house after the church people, regardless of the tobacco that was spit on the floor, which was enough to provoke the angels of Heaven and now because he will not keep it up all summer one of the would-be influential parties is trying to raise all the ugly imps of the infernal regions.

From “Around the Town” by Scott Snyder: “‘He’ll be better off in the army than he would be in jail,’ remarked Sheriff E.A. Burger Monday when he checked up on an automobile thief. April 17 a car belonging to F. B. Hidleburg, of Des Moines, was found in a ditch on Highway 90. The sheriff and his men got busy, dragged a machine to an Adel garage, and notified the owner. Then they learned it had been stolen by a young man named Raymond Davis, of Des Moines. When they went after him it was learned that he had joined the army and had been sent to a training camp. The officers are willing to let him pay his obligation to society by fighting for Uncle Sam.”

From “By George” by George DeFord: “The dog situation in Adel is more or less getting out of hand again. One lady reported to me that she is reluctant to allow her youngsters to go out and play because of the large number of dogs roaming the city. She told me she counted 12 dogs the other morning in her backyard. Also folks are coming to the place where they put their garbage out on pick-up days then have to stand guard over it until the truck passes. If they don’t they are picking up garbage all over the parking from the torn sacks. We have a law concerning dogs. Why not enforce it?”

Another from “By George” by George DeFord: “I fully agree with the proposal by House Speaker ‘Tip’ O’Neil that both men and women should register for the selective service when the program begins again.”
