The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), the Center of Disease Control (CDC), and local health agencies have now reported 71 known cases of cyclospora-a rare parasite that causes an intestinal illness.
There are three reported cases in Dallas County.
Currently, the source of the outbreak is unknown, but has been traced to the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables that are contaminated with the parasite.
Many of the illnesses began in mid to late June and can last an average of 57 days.
Those who have been experiencing long bouts of diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, vomiting or a low grade fever, should contact their health professional.
