Della Weems, a literature teacher at Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School, was recently awarded the Golden Apple Award for October.
Weems said she was shocked and honored to be nominated.
“My first thoughts were, ‘I’m not sure I can walk out there,’” Weems said. “I didn’t know what to say, but I was so honored.”
Teaching at A-D-M and working with the kids is what makes each day rewarding, Weems added.
“The magic of teaching is always the kids,” she said. “I’ve come to understand it’s absolutely about establishing relationships with kids. They teach me, and I teach them.”
A-D-M Principal Lee Griebel said Weems is deserving of the nomination and plays an integral part at the high school. “She is exceptional to not only the language arts department but also the building as a whole,” Griebel said. “She is incredibly dedicated to education, her students and goes above and beyond what’s expected to make her students successful.”
Receiving support from colleagues and the administration at A-D-M is also important to Weems.
“A-D-M has a tremendous facility, outstanding staff and administration, and receives amazing support from the community,” she said.
Weems has taught at A-D-M for over 20 years.
She has six children and resides in rural Adel with her husband, Darrell.
