Kinnick Jr.’s trophy to be on display in Adel

The City of Adel and the Adel Historical Museum will hold a special viewing of Nile Kinnick, Jr.’s Heisman Trophy on Saturday, June 14, 2014, from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Adel Public Library – 303 S. 10th Street. Special guest Herky the Hawk will also be on hand to interact and take photos with attendees.

This once-in-a-generation opportunity will help drive support and raise funds for a new museum addition honoring former and longtime Adel citizens Nile Kinnick, Jr. and his grandfather, Gov. George Washington Clarke. Kinnick’s Heisman Trophy represents the culmination of his many athletic accomplishments, which supplemented his numerous achievements outside of sport, including writing, public speaking, and civic involvement. Kinnick is the only Heisman recipient to win the award playing for a school in the State of Iowa. This incredible event would not be possible without the contributions of time, resources and the temporary loaning of the cherished Heisman Trophy to display, from the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame and Museum. We encourage visitors in eastern Iowa and Iowa City to stop in and see the great displays and artifacts preserving the history of University of Iowa athletics throughout the years at the Athletics Hall of Fame and Museum.

Please help support the Adel Historical Museum by attending this extraordinarily rare visit from Nile Kinnick, Jr.’s 1939 Heisman Trophy. The museum currently lacks the space to honor the legacy of Nile Kinnick, Jr. and all the artifacts the committee has received over time. A new addition will provide space to enhance educational endeavors and properly display the many Kinnick artifacts. Please visit the City’s website (www.adeliowa.org) and social media pages in the upcoming weeks for more information about this special event. A $20 viewing fee (or $50 maximum per family) will go directly to the Kinnick Museum. In addition to this extremely rare and limited viewing of Kinnick’s Heisman Trophy, visitors will get to view the entire Kinnick collection and interact and take a picture with Herky. A grilled lunch special, and a day pass to the Adel Family Aquatic Center will also be included. This very special event was made possible by the generous donations of Adel’s Fareway Store and Lincoln Savings Bank. All paying visitors will automatically be entered into a drawing for a Dallas Clark autographed jersey and other autographed sports memorabilia.
