RAGBRAI and Bacon Fest are teaming up for a bike ride along the Raccoon River Valley Trail — BACooN RIDE: THE RIDE for the CURED. The ride will be held June 28, starting and ending in Waukee and following a 71-mile route. Along the way, riders will cruise through Ortonville, Adel, Redfield, Linden, Panora, Yale, Herndon, Jamaica, Dawson, Perry, Minburn, and Dallas Center. Riders opting for a shorter trip can use optional starting points to cut down the route’s length. The ‘bacon’ theme goes farther than just bacon snacks and a bacon-themed lunch offered for riders. Registration also includes a PassPORK punch card for bacon treats, a commemorative BACooN Ride T-shirt, and a custom BACcooN Ride steel pint for the first 1,000 riders to register. Ride support and mechanics will also be available.
“This seems to me to be the perfect combination of a fun, kind of crazy event on a great recreational trail in an area with a strong agricultural economy and tradition,” says Chuck Offenburger, Raccoon River Valley Trail enthusiast. “Lord knows we raise a lot of pigs – so we’re makin’ bacon – in Dallas, Guthrie, and Greene Counties where the trail runs.
“We’re going to see more and more of these events in the future. What’s really required of all of us who live out here is to be good hosts, take time to chitchat with visitors, and just have fun ourselves.”
Visit bacoonride.com to register. The registration fee is $45 before May 1 and $55 before June 1. Before June 27, the late registration fee is $60 and does not guarantee a steel pint or T-shirt. Registration will not be available onsite. All proceeds go to the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, RAGBRAI’s Dream Team, and other Iowa charities.
