Waukee Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is conducting a shoe collection drive from May 1 through July 31 to benefit people in developing nations and our local youth. Individuals can help by dropping off shoes they no longer wear at Waukee Christian Church or the Waukee YMCA.
In the US alone, approximately 630 million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year. The materials used to manufacture a pair of shoes are created from chemical compounds that create health hazards if left to disintegrate in landfills. By donating your used shoes to Waukee Christian Church, your shoes are given a second chance to make a difference. All donated shoes will be redistributed. The first 200 youth shoes will be given to local children in partnership with Waukee Area Christian Services. The rest of the shoes will go overseas where native people are being trained to start, maintain, and grow a business that will help feed, clothe, and house their families.
“We are very excited to be conducting this shoe drive in Waukee. The shoe drive serves two purposes. It helps people and it reduces waste. This is a win-win for everyone,” said Rev. Sue Woods. “Our goal is to collect 2,000 pairs of shoes. The only way we can do that is if the community steps up and helps. We are asking everyone to clean out their unwanted, used shoes and donate. They are being collected at the Waukee YMCA and at the Waukee Christian Church at the corner of Highway 6 and T Avenue, one mile west of Waukee.”
