Thousands of hungry visitors will swarm into downtown Adel Saturday as the city hosts its 34th annual “Sweet Corn Festival.”
Although dozens of volunteers are making last-minute preparations, event organizers are seeking volunteers to help in the corn shucking on Friday evening.
That event has been moved to the Adel Public Safety Building parking lot. Anyone can help shuck the tons of corn by showing up between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Beverages will be provided.
In addition to corn shucking, Friday will also feature the annual A-D-M Alumni Golf Tournament at River Valley Golf Course and the 16th annual A-D-M Alumni Reunion. A teen dance will be held beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the corner of Main and 10th streets.
A 5k run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and the annual Sweet Corn Festival Parade lines up at 8:30 a.m. and begins an hour later.
After the parade, visitors will be treated to an estimated 15,000 ears of sweet corn, purchased by Adel Partners.
Saturday events include countless downtown vendors, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a “Friends of the Library” book sale, and a car show.
The Adel Historical Museum will be open, the Adel Fire Department will have a display, kids’ rides will be located on 9th Street, and live entertainment will be featured all day. A beer garden will open at 5 p.m.
Free parking and a shuttle bus will be provided from the A-D-M High School parking lot to downtown. The service is provided by HomeCare Services on a donation basis.
