Van Meter Visitor festival this weekend

The City of Van Meter will celebrate its bizarre past with the Van Meter Visitor Festival to be held Saturday, Sept. 28 from 7 p.m. until midnight.

During September of 1903, the town of Van Meter was terrorized by a giant, 8-foot bat-like creature for five nights. Over 110 years later, the town will celebrate the happening.

The event is free and open to all ages with dinner being served from 4-7 p.m. at Fat Randi’s.

Then at 7 p.m. the Van Meter Public Library will display artwork by Randy Meier.

An hour later, researchers Noah Voss and Kevin Nelson will discuss how the case was discovered, explanations and their thoughts on what happened in 1903.

At 10 p.m. researcher Chad Lewis will head a downtown walking tour that retraces the mysterious events, including stops at the very locations the beast was seen and shot at. The tour will end in the old mine which served as the creature’s lair.
