Waukee students will be performing “The Wizard of Oz” starting April 10-12 with performances at 7 p.m. and an additional performance at 2 p.m. on April 12.
“I wanted to choose a musical that would include a lot of people and since it was the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz it seemed like a perfect fit,” Jacki Pleggenkuhle, Waukee theatre arts director, said.
Maddie Baccam will be playing the role of Dorothy Gale. She longs for adventure but finds herself searching for a way back home after being tossed into the magical world of Oz.
Senior Davis Patton will be in search of a heart while playing the tin man. Senior Kellen Schrimper will be in search of a brain as the scarecrow and senior Dustin Eubanks will be searching for courage while playing the cowardly lion. You wouldn’t be in Munchkinland without Glinda the Good Witch, played by Bridget Johnston.
While these legendary characters are vital to the musical, what is Munchkinland without munchkins? A vast majority of the production is made up of munchkins, jitterbugs and flying monkeys.
The work that takes place behind the scenes is just as magical as the musical itself. A large crew helps to bring Munchkinland alive in this year’s musical. There is a team of hair and make-up, costumes, set, lighting and sound and also stage managers.
“I can already tell the musical is going to be amazing. The costumes are how people will identify them when they enter the stage,” sophomore Vivian Le, costume and make-up crewmember, said.
Pleggenkuhle expects the musical to bring in a wide range of audiences. You can help support the program by purchasing one of three different T-shirt designs to promote the play. T-shirts will be available for purchase at Warrior World the week of April 7 for $15.
