Winterset to celebrate birthday of icon

The City of Winterset is celebrating the long-awaited opening of the John Wayne Birthplace Museum with a kick-off birthday celebration on May 23-24.

New this year will be a rodeo/western swing dance on May 23 with individual admission at $15, $25 for combined, and a special appearance by Lana Wood, who played Debbie in “The Searchers.”

The event will also feature John Wayne’s daughter, Aissa Wayne, and New York Times best-selling authors Scott Eyman and Glenn Frankel. The Cowboy Mounted Shooters Association will also be there.

Free screenings of John Wayne’s movies, the firemans pancake breakfast, 5K run/walk, dessert tastings, and tours of Madison County’s Covered Bridges will be available.

A benefit for the John Wayne Birthplace Museum will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. Reservations are $125 per person.
