Betty Tingwald age 72, of Woodward died on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Perry. Visitation will be Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Peoples Cemetery, Rural Woodward. Memorials contributions will be given to the family and may be left at the Funeral Home. Betty Jean Tingwald was born on January 25, 1942 at Panora, IA to Carrol D. and Helena C. (Volkmer) Gander. She graduated from Panora High School. She was united in marriage to Duane R. Tingwald in April of 1961. Betty started working for the Post Office in 1961 and later became the Post Master in 1984. Retirement came in 2012. Also she wrote articles for the Northeast Dallas County Record newspaper and worked some at Virginia’s Clothing in Perry. Betty was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served with the Youth Council, Ladies Aid, taught Sunday school at both Trinity and Christ Lutheran churches. Betty started working for the Post Office in 1961 and later became the Post Master in 1984 at the Bouton post office. Also was a 4-H leader for 10 years. Worked with BBC (Bouton Betterment Committee) and was known as the pancake lady at the Bouton Breakfast. Betty enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, traveling and was able to travel to Washington D.C., Alaska and Hawaii. In her spare time she was reading, and loved being with people. She helped organize the starting of Xenia for Bouton in 1972. Betty was not afraid to help on the farm.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Carrol and Helena Gander and a brother, Dean Gander.
Survivors include her husband, Duane Tingwald, Woodward, IA, a daughter, Tami (Chris) Strait, Granger, IA, granddaughter, Leah (Adam) Ray, Des Moines, IA, 2 sisters, Dee Martinson, Altoona, IA and Bev Prichard, Polk City, IA, a brother, Delbert Gander, Newton, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
