Harold Archie Dunbar, 88, of De Soto passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, November 21st at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Earlham. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 22nd at the United Methodist Church in De Soto. Archie was born December 5, 1924 to Burt and Phoebe (Evans) Dunbar in Adams Township. He attended 12 years of schooling in De Soto and called the De Soto area home all of his life.

Archie was inducted in the United States Army in 1944 and he was sent to France where he joined the 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division. He fought as a Rifleman in the Battle of the Bulge helping to save France and fought on into Germany to end the war. Archie made the rank of Sergeant on the battle grounds of France for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy in WWII. He received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and Ribbon with 2 starts for fighting in France and Germany. After returning home he started his own trucking business; doing business as Dunbar Stockyards which he operated for 39 years.

Archie was manager of the De Soto Little League for 15 years, 1951 through 1966. He loved all children and still attended his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities and school events. Archie was a horse-lover and showed quarter horses for 18 years. He also loved going to the rodeo.

He was preceded in death by his parents Burt and Phoebe Dunbar; wife: Ida Dunbar; brother: Daryl Dunbar; sisters: Madelyn Bratton and Joyce Joiner; daughter: Vicki Morrison.

He is survived by his children: Jan (Phillip) Moore of Earlham and Wayne (Kim) Dunbar of Van Meter; grandchildren: Shawn Moore of Indianola and his children: Kolby of Arkansas and Kenadi of Indianola, Mark (Marnie) Moore of Earlham and their children: Garrett and Darby, Justin Morrison of Ames, Wesley (Autumn) Morrison of De Soto and their children: Lani and Jaeden, Dugan Dunbar of Oklahoma, Anna Dunbar of Oklahoma and her children: Tamaya and Kimani, Laela Rodriguez of Oklahoma and her son: Avery, Austin Dunbar of Van Meter, Shelby Dunbar of Van Meter; brother-in-law: Bob Wright of De Soto and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends that will miss him dearly.
