Hermon was born September 8, 1919 to Hermon and Ethel Parker Maxson in Redfield, Iowa. He was always known as Leon. Leon started school in Redfield and attended high school there. After high school, he farmed with his father for awhile, and drove a gravel truck when they were resurfacing the roads. Leon found his real vocation when e started selling Ford Cars for Hunters Motor Company in Earlham. He really enjoyed his job, and liked to see a sale go through. Leon retired when Hunters sold to Noble Ford Company. Then after all those years selling Fords, he surprised his family by going out and buying a Chevy Lumina. On May 29, 1963, Leon was united in marriage to Eloise Coulter in Omaha, Nebraska. Ernest and Joyce Baiatto went with them from Bear Creek Friends and preformed the ceremony. Leon and Eloise then went on a honeymoon, and then returned to their new home in Redfield.
Leon joined Bear Creek Friends where Eloise had attended all of her life.
Leon enjoyed attending Old Thrashers Day at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; watching car races; and going to see old time cars in parades. He also spent a lot of time in his garage doing anything mechanical.
As their health seemed to require it, Leon and Eloise moved into Redfield Senior Citizen Apartments. Eloise suffered a heart attack in 2006 and had to be admitted to the Community Care Center in Stuart. Leon moved into the nearby Willows Assisted Living apartments until he fell and broke his hip. Then he joined Eloise in the Community Care Center. Eloise passed away October 10, 2012. Leon continued in the Care Center until he passed away on July 22, 2014.
Those preceding Leon in death were his parents: Hermon and Ethel Maxson; sisters: Charlene and Margaret; and nephew: Jim. Those left behind are his brother-in-laws: Eldon Coulter and wife Marilyn, and Marvin Coulter and wife Melanie; sister-in-law: Martha Mendenhall; two nieces: Susan and Nancy; nieces by marriage: Eldonna and Juanita Coulter and Karen Mendenhall; nephew by marriage: Lance Coulter; great-niece and nephew: Emma Skahill and Ben Adkins; great-great-niece and nephew: Avery and Charlie Adkings; and a host of other friends that will miss him dearly.
