Leonhardt George Herman Daib, age 88, passed away on April 17, 2014. He was born on August 4, 1925 in Dexter, IA to the Reverend Kurt and Ida Daib. Len graduated from Dexter High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army and was discharged as an Infantry Master Sergeant. He attended Iowa State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry.

In 1950, Len married Shirley Plagge from Mason City, IA. They settled in Grimes and were blessed with two children: Dean (Mary) Daib, of Earlham; and Debbie (Doug) Mertz of Urbandale. Len loved his five grandchildren: Kyle (Amanda) Mertz of Altoona; Meredith (Andy) Schwendemann of Greenwood, S.C.; Elizabeth (Brian) Kaldunski of Wausau, WI; Kathryn (Jared) Battani of Waukee; and Michael (Kara) Mertz of Ankeny. Additionally, Len has four great-grandchildren: Tessa and Isaac Battani and Palmer and Flynn Mertz of Altoona. His fifth great-grand child, is expected in May.

Len was preceded into Heaven by his parents and his three sisters: Kathryn Cross of St. Louis, MO; Margaret Adkins of Dexter, and Christine Arnold of Shenandoah.

Len was a gifted athlete and a dedicated business man. He was both a lineman on the Iowa State Football team and a heavy weight wrestler for the Cyclones. Len started his work life with the Grimes Lumber and Grain, Co. in 1950 and then owned the Grimes Lumber Company until his retirement in 1989. He was a devoted community servant holding positions on the Grimes CIty Council, School Board and volunteer fire department. He was a fifty-year member of the Grimes Lion’s Club. He held several leadership positions at both Mt. Olive and Gloria Dei Lutheran Churches.

Len loved sports, especially watching his children and grandchildren play. He loved golf, Major League Baseball and playing cards with friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 8301 Aurora Avenue, in Urbandale. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
