Mary Elaine Pecenka, 83, passed away peacefully Friday, August 8, 2014, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger with burial to follow at Beaver Catholic Cemetery.

Mary was born on December 20, 1930, near Ayrshire, Iowa to Fred and Gertrude (Firth) Hubbeling. She spent her early years working and living on the family farm. Following high school she earned her teaching certificate and taught in a one-room school house near Pickstown, SD, during which time she met and married Edward J. Pecenka in 1950. After various moves they made their home in Granger where they raised their two children. Mary continued tutoring part time for several years. She became a home health care aid and a certified lab technician in Student Health Services at Drake University. Mary also was instrumental in starting Granger Emergency Medical Services. Following her retirement Mary continued home health care for the elderly.

Mary enjoyed the Antique Tractor and Thresher’s Reunions, antiques, Lake Robbins Ballroom dances, blue grass revivals and Elvis. She also enjoyed reading and word search puzzles.

Mary is survived by her children Edward S. (Debbie) Pecenka of Madrid and Deanna (Greg) Strait of Perry; her brother, John Hubbeling of Ingram, TX; her grandchildren, Christopher Pecenka, Jake Strait, Hanna Boehde, Randy Pecenka, Sarah Pecenka, and Ryan Pecenka; and her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Martha Bailey and her grandson Scott Pecenka.

The family received friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday at Assumption Church in Granger where a vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Granger EMS or the Wounded Warrior Project. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
