Ronald Eugene Hughes, age 87, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014 in Ankeny, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 23, at Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Street in Boone from 2:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., with the family present at the funeral home from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Visitation will continue at the funeral home Monday at 8:00 A.M. until service time.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 24, 2014 at Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone with Pastor Brian Ruggles officiating.

Burial will at Squire Boone Cemetery in south rural Boone, Iowa. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.

Ronald was born on July 7, 1926 in Hamilton County, Iowa, the son of Howard Harvey and Myrtle Belle (Rush) Hughes.

Ronald attended country school in Boone County and graduated from Boone High School in 1944.

On June 11, 1955, Ronald married Meredith Rae Huenink in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ronald served in the Army Air Corp and the Air National Guard until his retirement, with the rank of Master Sergeant.

During the time in service, he was a Jet Engine Technician. He also worked on engines of all kinds. Ronald enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Ronald is preceded in death by his parents; his 2 sons, Neil Hughes Val Gene Lewis; his 3 sisters, Lois Wilcox, Janice Hughes and Lola Mole.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Meredith Rae Hughes of Ankeny, Iowa; his 3 sons, Layne Hughes (Connie) of Euless, Texas, Chris Hughes of Ames, Iowa, Bruce Hughes (Angela) of Ankeny, Iowa, Darwin Lewis (Ginger) of Springdale, Arkansas and Royce Lewis of Landers, California; his 8 grandchildren, Jeremy Hughes, Kate-Lynn Peery, Matthew Hughes, Erin Fuller, Jason Hughes, Shane Hughes, Lauren Hughes and Logan Hughes; his 3 great grandchildren, Alexander Fuller, Raven Fuller, Cadence Hughes and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews.

In memory of Ronald, memorials may be directed to the family.
