Ruby was born February 25, 1914, in White Rock, South Dakota, to Leva Rosella (Nelson) and Louis Fernando Barie. She grew up in Spencer and Adel, graduating from Adel High School. She loved school, especially studying math and playing basketball. She also loved dancing, and met Harold James Benz of Dexter at a dance. Their first date was to go to a rodeo in which he competed. They were married February 20, 1936 and, a few years later, welcomed a son, Jerry Wayne Benz. Ruby and Harold farmed near Dallas Center for almost forty years before retiring to town, where she lived for another 20 years. Ruby was an active member of the Dallas Center United Methodist Church for almost 70 years and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, her many dogs and attending her ladies’ church circle and GT Club meetings. In the mid-1990s Ruby moved to Adel to be closer to her siblings, returning to Dallas Center in 2011 to live at Spurgeon Manor. She died on June 20, 2014 from complications of a stroke.
Ruby is survived by her sister, Hazel Barie, of Adel; her daughter-in-law, Carole Benz, of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Michael Benz (Nancy Benz) of Ramsey, MN, and Rebecca Benz (Karl Narveson) of Minneapolis; and her four great-grandchildren, Scott, Craig, Sophia, and Solveig. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, and two brothers.
Memorials may be directed to Spurgeon Manor or Dallas Center United Methodist Church.
