Walter Junior Knapp

Walter Junior Knapp, 79, son of Walter & Helen (Myers) Knapp, Sr., was born April 8, 1934 at his farm near Linden, Iowa. He passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Panora Nursing & Rehab Center.

He lived on three farms in Dallas County and attended school in Linden. He graduated from Linden High School in 1951 and soon after enlisted in the United States Marines.

As a child he attended Shiloh Church and was a member of the Boy Ambassadors. This group was led by men in the church, wore uniforms and memorized scriptures, among other activities. He was one of three charter members of the Linden Lions and belonged for 45 years. He also belonged to the Panora Masonic Lodge 121. He attended St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Panora and marched in many American Legion parades showing pride in the United States Military. In 1993, he traveled to the Ukraine with a group of farmers to share farming techniques with the farmers of that country.

He married Barbara Gibson on November 28, 1964. Six children were born to this union, Matthew, Mark (Lisa), Jamie (Bev), Bill (Myra), Brenda (Katsuaki) Dobashi, and a baby boy who died at birth. Ten grandchildren, Madeline, Lydia, Corrie, Maisie, Ella, Will, Oliver, and McCormick Knapp, Yayoi and Ayano Dobashi. He adored his grandchildren and enjoyed their activities. He is also survived by four sisters, Marjorie Baker, LaVonne Dierks, Elva Pittman, and Shirlee Herrold, plus many nieces, nephews, other family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, granddaughter Bella, brother Orville, and sister Charlotte.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 11, 2013, from 5-7 P.M. at Twigg Funeral Home, Panora.

He has donated his body to Des Moines University.
