To the Editor:
One of the ten essential benefits required in the Affordable Care Act for insurance coverage is maternity and newborn care. There are those who claim that men should not have to pay for maternity coverage since it is physically impossible for them to become pregnant. For this main reason, women have been charged more for their health benefits. Beginning Jan. 1, 2014, this discrimination ends.
So men have nothing to do with maternity? Do men have no responsibility in the pregnancy and birth of their child? Therefore, men should not care about the health and welfare of the mother and fetus? Could this attitude be the reason that the U.S. has the highest first-day infant mortality out of the industrialized world?
