When Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia after serving on the Western Front in World War I, he takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on the isolated island of Janus Rock. After a time, Tom marries and brings his young wife, Isabel, to the island. Although they love their solitary life at the lighthouse; Isabel grieves deeply after she suffers two miscarriages and a still birth. When a boat washes up on their shore carrying a dead man and a living, tiny baby; Isabel insists the baby is a gift from God. Against his better judgment, she convinces Tom not to report the incident. They name the child Lucy and claim her as their own.
Isabel and Tom, with two-year-old Lucy in tow, return to the mainland for a visit and discover their choice has had devastating consequences. Tom’s conscience is at war with his love for Lucy and for his wife.
