Jesse Bennett hurled a 47-foot, 4-inch shot put throw to win the event at the Winterset Invitational on March 29.
Bennett was slowed last year by an ankle injury, but is starting this season strong.
“We’ve been waiting for Jesse to throw 47 feet, and he finally put it together at Winterset,” said coach Mike Whisner, whose team finished seventh in the 14-team field. “I would like to see him throw 50 feet this year.”
Another Tiger back from injury is senior Jordan Grove, who finished second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200 in his first outdoor track meet in two seasons. He clocked in at 11.80 seconds in the 100 and 23.81 in the 200.
Beck Goplerud was fourth in the 400 (53.93) and Grant Goeden was fifth in the 200 (24.43). The 4x800 team of Kyle Hovey, Goplerud, Josh Berger and Elijah McCartney was sixth, as was the 4x100 team of Kolton Wicks, Kolby Whisner, Goplerud and Goeden.
“All who competed set their first outdoor mark or time for the beginning of the season,” Whisner said. “We begin from here and try to improve every meet.”
