Brant leads W-G at Guthrie Center

Woodward-Granger sent eight wrestlers to the tough, 21-team Tiger Invitational on Feb. 1 in Guthrie Center, with one Hawk placing second and another fourth.

Clarion-Goldfield won the meet with 213 points. Humboldt (174) was second, with Ogden (156) Greene County (143) and Manson-NW Webster (124) completing the top five. W-G tied for 13th with Prairie Valley after both tallied 49 team points.

Race Brant was the highest-placing Hawk after finishing as the runner-up at 145 pounds.

He opened with pins of Clayton Miller of East Union in 33 seconds and of K.C. Bockoven of Prairie Valley in 1 minute, 49 seconds before claiming a 3-1 decision over Kyle Chalfant of Guthrie Center. He lost by fall to Class 1A fourth-ranked Payton Rice of Manson-NW Webster in 29 ticks in the finals to finish second.

Class 2A ninth-ranked Colton Milosevich opened with a bye before pinning Christian Hilgenberg of CR-B in 2:12. He dropped an 8-5 decision to 1A No. 4 Riley Klein of Underwood, responded with a pin of Ogden’s Shawn Heaning in 2:45 but was handed a loss by fall in 6:10 by Greene County’s Jacob Challen to finish fourth.

Kaleb Noel (113), Josh Keubler (126), Aaron Sperling (138), Tanner Vermaas (152), Collen Gibbons (160) and Ryan Hodges (285) were also in action for the Hawks, but did not place. Vermaas had one win, pinning Josh Allsup of Nodaway Valley in 1:30, with Hodges pinning Riverside’s Coy Maher in 1:56.

W-G wrestles in the Class 2A Sectional 7 at North Polk Saturday, with A-D-M, Bondurant-Farrar, Grinnell and Saydel joining the Hawks and host Comets on the mat. Weight class winners and runner-ups advance to the District 4 meet in Adel Feb. 15, where they will battle advancers from Carlisle, Central Decatur, Clark, Interstate-35, Van Meter and Winterset, who will have qualified from the Sectional 8 tourney in Winterset. Both the sectional and district meets will begin at 12 p.m.
