Van Meter is one win away from a perfect regular season after a 50-14 victory at West Central Valley on Oct. 18.

The Bulldogs got a 194-yard, four-touchdown performance from running back Cody Blackwell. He scored on dashes of 10, 13, 28 and 10 yards and inched over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Blackwell is 11th in Class 1A in rushing yards, and 10th in rushing touchdowns, with 15.

Brandon Brittain connected with Logan Crawford on a 25-yard play for the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the game, and Ben Trent added a 19-yard run into the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Chase Wyant had 14 tackles to lead the defense, while Parker Suckow finished with seven and Spencer Benton six. Ben Flaherty had two interceptions, and Trent added a third.

Van Meter closes out the regular season on Friday at Des Moines Christian, which will be played in Johnston. The Lions (2-6) need a victory to remain in the playoff picture, while the Bulldogs already have the No. 1 seed locked up in Class 1A District 7.

A win would give the Bulldogs the district title outright. Van Meter will host the first two rounds of postseason play, beginning Oct. 30.
