Bulldogs still ranked No. 2

The Van Meter baseball team is still ranked No. 2 in the most recent Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, which came out on June 29. North Polk is still the No. 1 ranked team.

It was shown on Tuesday night that the Bulldogs are mortal as their 21-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Roland-Story in Story City in the second game of a double header. The Bulldogs won the first game of the double header by a score of 6-5, but lost game two by a score of 8-3.

In the first game, Brandon Brittain started the game on the mound and allowed three hits and one earned run (five total) in seven innings. He also showed his power at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with two homeruns and three RBIs in the win.

In game two, it was Colton Boswell who took the mound for the Bulldogs, and in 3.2 innings pitched he surrendered four hits and three total runs (two earned) and was on the hook for the loss.

The Bulldogs played two games on July 3. They beat Des Moines Christian in Urbandale 10-6 before beating Panorama in Van Meter by a score of 11-2.

Against Des Moines Christian, Brandon Brittain went 3-for-3 at the plate with a homerun, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Kyle Schmitt and Jacob Eslick each also scored two runs each with Eslick stealing two bases as well.

Drake Doud and Ross Wesselmann each had two RBIs. Logan Crawford gave up four runs on six hits in four innings on the mound but was still in line for the win.

Against Panorama, Eslick stole two more bases and scored three runs while Schmitt had two RBIs and Doud and Nathen Smith scored two runs each.

On July 2 the Bulldogs defeated Martensdale-St. Marys by a score of 6-1 as they scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the seventh. Brittain pitched seven innings and struck out nine batters while giving up one run (zero earned) in the win.

After playing against Woodward Academy on Wednesday, the Bulldogs match up with A-D-M on Thursday night. JV starts at 5:30 p.m. with varsity to follow in Van Meter.
