Bulldogs still unbeaten

The Van Meter boys’ basketball team needed an extra frame to beat Madrid 68-63.

The Bulldogs trailed 49-35 entering the third quarter, but stormed back with a 25-11 run in the fourth quarter to force overtime and rally for their fourth win this season.

Ben Flaherty had 18 points and six rebounds. Stephen Folkerts added 14 points and nine rebounds, Ben Engstrand scored eight and Jake Eslick finished with seven points, four rebounds and five assists. Parker Suckow added seven points and eight rebounds off the bench.

That win came on the heels of a 72-50 victory over Woodward Academy on Dec. 6. Flaherty did the heavy lifting with 24 points on 12-of-16 shooting, as well as four assists. Folkerts added 16 points and seven assists, and Brandon Brittain finished with 13 points, five rebounds, eight assists and six steals. Suckow added nine points and six rebounds and Engstrand contributed six points and nine rebounds.

Van Meter travels Thursday to face Martensdale-St. Marys and Friday to Woodward-Granger. Van Meter coach Jed Alexander won a state championship as girls’ coach at M-SM.
