The Van Meter wrestling team competed at the Colfax-Mingo Wrestling Classic in Colfax on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1 in Colfax but couldn’t notch a win in the two-day event.
Van Meter lost to Colfax-Mingo 36-31 despite each team winning six matches. Of CM’s six wins, five were by forfeit while only one was by fall while Van Meter only won one match by forfeit. Bailey Tuma (106), Chase Wyant (138) and Spencer Benton (220) had wins by fall while Luke Costlow (120) won by decision 10-5 and Bray Watson (126) won by major decision 11-3.
Against Nevada, it was much of the same from the Bulldogs as they lost 42-21. Tuma won by fall and Costlow won 7-5.
Van Meter lost narrowly to Pleasantville by a score of 36-33. Wyant won by decision 7-0 while Colton Golwitzer (152) won by fall. All of Van Meter’s losses were by forfeit against Pleasantville.
Southeast Warren defeated Van Meter 48-22. Tuma won by major decision 11-3 and Wyant won by fall.
The Bulldogs wrestled against Central Decatur, I-35 and Martensdale-St. Mary’s on Jan. 30 and came away with one dual victory. The Bulldogs beat Martensdale-St. Mary’s 40-6 but lost to Central Decatur 54-22 and I-35 45-24.
Costlow won by major decision 15-4 and Wyant won by fall against Nash Wiegert at 3:45.
Against I-35 Tuma beat Nathan Phillips 5-1 and Brady Edwards (132) beat Preston Hubbard 11-10. Watson and Benton both won by fall.
Against Central Decatur Wyant won by major decision 12-1 and Benton won by fall against Trace Carson.
The Van Meter wrestlers will compete next at sectionals in Winterset on Saturday.
