With the High School Classic at Iowa State University in Ames behind them, the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn girls’ track team is now looking forward at the outdoor track season, which begins for them on March 31 with a meet at Dallas Center-Grimes. The Tigers are coming off of a 13th overall finish at the state tournament last season.

The Tigers competed at the ISU High School Classic, an indoor meet at Iowa State University, and will compete this Saturday at Central College in Pella at a similar competition in preparation for the outdoor season.

When discussing the team for this season, A-D-M coach Bart Mueller couldn’t commit to just one strength the team has as the season approaches.

“Really, top to bottom for the most part, with a few gaps in there, we’re pretty strong,” Mueller said.

Erica Baier, a three-time state qualifier in the discus throw will be returning to the team and will be a senior this year. At the state tournament last season, she finished 24th overall and did not compete at the ISU High School Classic on Monday.

Mueller also sang praises of one of his freshman throwers.

“We’ve got a freshman that threw tonight (Monday) and did pretty good, Sadie Johnson,” Mueller said. “She’s got some good strength, did really well in junior high meets last year, so I think she’ll get some points at the high school level.”

Mueller also thinks that the Tigers will be solid in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter run with state qualifier Brennan Hook returning this season.

“We’ll be solid there and get us some good points every meet,” Mueller said. “Hopefully she’ll drop time a little bit and move up, be a little hungrier to go to state and place a little higher this year.”

Last season at the state tournament, Hook finished 18th with a time of 11:46.68.

The Tigers will compete this Saturday at Central College in Pella in preparation for their first outdoor meet of the season, which is on March 31 at Dallas Center-Grimes.
