Drake Stadium, which plays host to the Drake Relays in April and the state co-ed track and field meet in May, played host to the AAU Junior Olympic Games that ran from July 26 to Aug. 2. 10 Dallas County athletes from ages 11-18 competed at the event, including two girls who competed on area high school teams last season.
A-D-M’s Kari Dufoe and Waukee’s Gabi Gaines competed at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Both of them were juniors last season and competed at the Drake Relays and the State Meet.
At the AAU Junior Olympic Games, Dufoe competed in three events: the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. Gaines competed in the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash and in the 4x100 meter relay as a member of the Iowa Core Elite Track Club.
Dufoe’s best finish was in the 200 meter dash where she took 15th overall. She qualified for the semifinals with a 24th place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 25.24 seconds which got her into the semifinals where she finished in 25.21. She did not qualify for the finals in that event.
She also took 25th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.38 and 26th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.47 seconds.
Gaines helped the Iowa Core Elite Track Club to a 16th place finish in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 48.62 seconds. She also took 27th overall in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.28 seconds and 41st overall in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.98 seconds.
Others who competed at the AAU Junior Olympic Games were Gary Hamilton, 13, and Daniel Jevon Burns, 14, from Granger, Troy Peitzman, 11, Drew Schmidt, 12, Gage Schmidt, 14, and Evan Schmidt, 14, from Grimes, Zachary Gaines, 12, and Jordan Perry, 14, from Waukee.
