Dallas County student athletes qualify for Drake

The Drake Relays is one of the biggest track and field events in the country. The event that begins on Wednesday at Drake Stadium features professional athletes, collegiate athletes and high school athletes.
Many of the high school athletes that will be participating at the Drake Relays this week are from right here in Dallas County.
Adel-DeSoto-Minburn had nine individuals and relay teams qualify, Dallas Center-Grimes had six qualify while Van Meter and Woodward-Granger each had one individual qualify. Waukee is leading the way, however, with 36 individuals and relay teams that qualified for the Drake Relays.
Two of the girls’ relay teams Waukee will be competing in competitions that their school already has the Drake Relays high school record for.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Gabi Gaines, Taylor Gates, Kayla Sabotin and Erika Lewis will competing at Drake. Waukee set the record for the event in 2009 with a time of 3:50.21.
The girls’ 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle team of Hannah Schau, Katelyn Seese, Danielle Modrell and Mallory Smith will also compete at Drake. Waukee set the record in that event last season with a time of 62.84 seconds.
For A-D-M, Tate Jensen is ranked No. 7 in the state in the 400 meter hurdles and qualified to compete in the event at Drake. They only take the top eigth in the state for that event and Jensen is the first runner for A-D-M coach Mike Whisner to qualify for the 400 meter hurdles in his 34 years of coaching track and field.
Jesse Bennett is ranked No. 22 as a shot put thrower and will be competing in that event on Friday at Drake Stadium.
A-D-M is sending to girls for individual competitions and four relays teams. Brianna Mueller will compete in the 800 meter dash, Madi Bertman will compete in the long jump and the 4x100 meter relay, 4x200 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay and sprint medley relay teams will all compete at Drake Stadium.
Reese Iverson will compete in the high jump for DC-G and 4x100 meter relay team will also compete at Drake. Madison Waymire will compete in the 1500 and 3000 meter runs while the girls’ 4x100 meter relay and shuttle hurlde relay teams will compete.
Brennan Dostal is Van Meter’s only Drake qualifier and will compete in the boys 100 meter dash. Woodward-Granger had Abby Musser qualify to compete in the 100 meter hurdles.
