The Dallas Center-Grimes volleyball team will have plenty of experience on the court this year as they are returning seven letter winners (five starters) to the team for the 2014 season. Seniors Ellen Judd, Lexi Rosa, Paige Shanno and Jenna Humke and juniors Selena Nolte and Chelsea Eilers are the returning starters this year while Hali Pellatz and Laura Judd are returning letter winners as well.

DC-G coach Cheryl Voelker said that their depth is going to be their strong point this season after going 13-22 overall last season.

“We will have a lot of depth this season wtih many strong juniors, sophomores and a few freshman,” Voelker said. “The program is developing well.”

Nolte led the team in kills last season with 242 and .215 kill efficiency and 2.69 kills per set. Eilers was right behind her with 124 throughout the season as well as leading the way with 38 (0.4 per set) aces and 174 digs (1.87 per set).

Humke was the teams leader in assists as she had 534 (5.74 per set) during the 2013 campaign. Judd led the team in total blocks with 42 (0.49 per set) last year.

After winning six conference games last year, Voelker, who enters her third year as the Fillies’ coach, said that they have a good chance of finishing atop the Little Hawkeye Conference with Newton and Pella also being contenders.

“Our goal is to play as a team and continue to improve throughout the season and have a strong finish in the end,” Voelker said.

The Fillies started their season by hosting an invitational in Grimes on Aug. 26. Their next home action will be on Thursday, Sept. 16 against Norwalk in Grimes.
