The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) cross country team opened the 2014 season with a fourth-place finish in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Time Trial August 23 at Emmetsburg.
Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) took the team championship with 35 points. DMACC scored 91 points in placing fourth. Hannah Palmeter of North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) took the individual championship, touring the 5K (3.1-mile) course in 18 minutes, 28 seconds.
DMACC was led by freshman Michelle Thayer of Des Moines. Her time was 20:26, giving her a fourth-place finish overall. Sophomore Kim Teno of Albia was 11th in 21:32 and freshman Shannon Mullnix of Williamsburg finished 13th in 21:39. Rounding out the DMACC effort were sophomore Shea Smalley of Marion and freshman Juliana Stahle of Norwalk, Smalley placed 29th in 24:44 and Stahle was 34th in 25:21.
Freshmen Molly Claman of Grimes and Kendra Chapman of Adel also competed for DMACC. Claman was 39th in 27:00 and Chapman finished 49th in 33:32.
The DMACC cross country team will compete in the Bill Buxton Invitational Aug. 29 at Indianola.
