Fillies capture third place in Little Hawkeye

Dallas Center-Grimes closed out the regular season with a 3-0 victory at Knoxville on Tuesday.

With the 25-18, 25-22, 25-21 win, the Fillies closed out their inaugural season in the Little Hawkeye Conference with a 5-2 conference mark, good for third place in the conference. Their only losses were to Pella, which shared the conference title with Newton, and Oskaloosa. DC-G beat Newton 3-2, and logged victories over Pella Christian, Norwalk and Grinnell.

Selena Nolte had a team-high 12 kills against Knoxville. Ellen Judd added six, Jenna Humke had 24 assists and Kaitlin Wenell recorded 13 digs.

“I’m very proud of how they played last night,” coach Cheryl Voelker said. “It’s a great way to end the conference season and lead into postseason play.”

DC-G won one of three matches at Winterset’s tournament on Oct. 19.

The Fillies beat Hampton-Dumont 21-14, 21-18, but suffered losses to Nevada, 21-19, 21-8, and Creston, 21-16, 21-19.

Nolte recorded 14 kills and six blocks to pace the Fillies. Chelsea Eilers had 12 kills and 12 digs, and Paige Shanno contributed seven kills.

Humke finished with 33 assists, and Wenell recorded 15 digs.

DC-G (11-21) opens Class 4A Region 2 play on the road at Winterset on Oct. 28. The two teams haven’t faced each other this season. The Fillies beat were 2-0 against the Huskies last season.

The winner advances to face top-ranked Harlan, a state qualifier in 2012, in the regional semifinal on Oct. 31. The Fillies lost to Harlan in the playoffs last season.
