Selena Nolte recorded 14 kills as Dallas Center-Grimes outlasted its former Raccoon River Conference foe 3-2 in a Class 4A first-round match on Monday.
The Fillies jumped out to a 2-0 start with a 25-9 win in the first set and a 25-21 decision in the second. Winterset countered with wins in the third and fourth sets, 25-17, 25-22, before DC-G closed out the win with a 15-11 fifth set.
Jenna Humke recorded 29 assists, while Kaitlin Wenell dug up 24 balls and Chelsea Eilers was perfect serving with five aces.
“The team is playing well together, and we’re right where we want to be at this time of year,” coach Cheryl Voelker said. “We’re working hard for each point up to the end of each game.”
The road gets much tougher in the semifinals, with a semifinal trip to top-ranked Harlan on the docket for Thursday. The Cyclones are 32-4, with their only losses coming against Class 5A No. 1 Ankeny (twice), Class 2A No. 1 Dike-New Hartford, and Class 2A No. 2 Western Christian. They’ve won 12 of their last 13 matches and breezed through the Hawkeye Ten Conference with an unblemished 10-0 mark.
The winner will advance to the regional final on Nov. 5 at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln with a potential matchup with No. 11 Lewis Central.
