Hawks putting pieces together

The Woodward-Granger netters used the A-D-M Invitational Sept. 5 to their advantage, winning five of six matches to improve to 8-6 overall on the season. The Hawks, who were replacing most of their starting lineup as the season opened, claimed 12 of the 14 individual games played.

Host ADM defeated W-G, 2-1, on scores of 21-16, 12-21 and 15-9 in the first match in the invite for the Hawks. W-G then went on a five-match run, defeating, in order, Interstate-35 (21-18, 21-15), Newton (6-21, 21-16, 15-9), WCV (21-12, 21-6), Perry (21-13, 21-16) and Knoxville (21-16, 21-15).

Abby Musser finished with a combined 31 kills for the Hawks, with Olivia McCune adding 23 kills, Bree Lesch 18, Cailin Coker 14, Abby Hansen eight and Dalaney Bice three. Hansen had 10 blocks and McCune seven, with Bice adding six denials, Coker three and Lesch one.

Leading the way with assists was Maggie Bermel with 43 and Mary Hansen with 31 while Musser (65), Lesch (51) and Tori Manning (41) paced the squad in total digs.

Musser had 17 aces on 47-of-53 serving, with Lesch tallying 10 aces on 44-of-47 serving. Manning was 43-47-4 behind the line, with McCune 40-44-3, Bermel 26-32-4 and Mary Hansen 25-28-2

The Hawks on Tuesday were edged in five sets by Des Moines Christian, 25-21, 17-25, 25-16, 21-25, 9-15. Musser had a team-high 11 kills and four aces. McCune added 10 kills, and both Hansen and Lesch had six.
