Kuyper, Sylvester place eighth at state doubles

Jake Kuyper and Mike Sylvester finished eighth at the Class 2A state tennis doubles’ competition in Cedar Rapids on May 24-25.

The Waukee duo dropped their first match to Iowa City West’s Adam Dellos and Trent Schneider 7-5, 6-0, but rallied back in impressive fashion to reach the medal round. They beat Ankeny’s Ryan Marshall and Grant Menadue 6-1, 7-6(2) and then turned away the other Ankeny team, Luke Benna and Tabor VanDePol, 6-2-61.

Kuyper and Sylvester fell to Clinton’s Jakob Kruse and Ryan Schroeder 6-4, 6-4, and dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to West Des Moines Valley’s Ryan Peterson and Yasha Litvak in the seventh-place match.

Senior Drew Hays recorded a victory in the singles competition, rallying from a deficit to beat Michael Porubcin 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2. He lost in the second round to eventual champion Brady Anderson of Linn-Mar, 6-2, 6-1, and then was turned away by Linn-Mar’s Tim Paulson, 6-7(3), 6-3, 1-0(3). Paulson went on to finish eighth.
