Race Brant and Colton Milosevich were the only Woodward-Granger wrestlers to compete in the district wrestling tournament in Adel on Feb. 15. Both wrestlers got at least a top-two finish and qualified for the state tournament set to start on Thursday in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena.
In his first-round mathcup in the 120-pound bracket, Milosevich beat Winterset’s Derek Koster by fall at 1:25 to advance to the finals where he would face Justice Hitchcock of Bondurant-Farrar who had beaten Van Meter’s Luke Costlow by decision 12-10. Milosevich defeated Hitchcock in the finals by fall at 0:27 to take first place in the 120-pound bracket and advance to the state tournament.
Brant needed to wrestle three matches in the 145-pound bracket to get second place and advance to state. In his first-round match he beat Winterset’s Mitchell Holcomb by fall at 3:45 to advance to the finals where he would wrestle Grinnell’s Garret Jay.
Jay had beaten Central Decatur’s Darin Martin in the first round by major decision 14-2. Jay beat Brant in the finals by fall at 5:33, forcing Brant to wrestle in the second-place match. Brant got the decision over Martin by a score of 6-2 to take second place and get a bid for the state tournament.
The state tournament runs from Thursday to Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Class 2A begins at 9 a.m. with first-round matches and first-round consolations. The grand march and the finals for all classes begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
