A-D-M’s Dylan Nelson and Van Meter’s Brandon Brittain were tabbed for first-team all-state honors, the Iowa Newspaper Association announced this week.
Nelson landed on the Class 3A first team aftergoing 9-1 with a 1.06 ERA this season. In 72 2/3 innings, he struck out 101, walked 21, allowed 48 hits and held opponents to a .161 average. At the plate, he hit .405 with one home run, 19 doubles and 27 RBIs.
Brittain, who led the Bulldogs to their first state apperance in 10 years, hit .555, slugged 1.067 and led Class 1A with 16 homers and 68 RBIs, while his 66 hits were good for second in Class 1A. He also had a 9-1 record on the mound with a 1.58 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 71 innings.
Brittain’s teammate, Jake Chevalier, was named to the Class 1A second team. The lefty hit .413 with a .496 on-base percentage and drove in 42 runs.
Jake Lewis of Dallas Center-Grimes was named to the Class 3A second team, while A-D-M catcher Logan Essy was tabbed for the third team. Lewis helped the Mustangs to their second straight state tournament, going 7-4 with a 2.30 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 76 innings. He also hit .373 and was 13-for-14 in stolen bases.
Essy hit .442 for the Tigers, with an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging percentage of .605. He collected 19 doubles and drove in 37 runs.
