With a preseason ranking of No. 8 by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association, it seemed as though the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn boys’ soccer team had high expectations this season from coaches around the state.
Through the Tigers’ first four matches this season, they have lost three, including their first three matches of the season at the tournament that they hosted at A-D-M High School.
The Tigers’ most recent match, a match at home against Carroll, was their first win of the season and they did it in blowout fashion, defeating Carroll 5-0 on Monday.
Jacob Hutzell, a senior this season, scored three goals in the contest. Juniors Derek Gushiken and Ryan Head each had a goal apiece.
Senior Robbie Sloss had two assists in the match while junior Connor Luther also had an assist. Darold Baker started the game in goal and made two saves in 65 minutes before Brett Buscher played the final 15 minutes of the game as the goalkeeper.
The Tigers began their season, hosting a tournament at A-D-M High School but came out of the event 0-3 to start the season.
In the first match of the tournament on April 4, the Tigers had a rematch against their state tournament first-round opponent from last season in Waverly-Shell Rock. WSR’s Isaiah Mundell had two goals in the match as the Go-Hawks rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Tigers.
On April 5, A-D-M coach Bill Shields liked the way the Tigers played, but they still came away winless in two games. In the first game the Tigers fell to St. Albert, Council Bluffs by a score of 2-1 and then to Des Moines East, the champion of the tournament, by a score of 1-0.
Down 1-0 after a St. Albert goal in the last minute of the first half, A-D-M’s Noah Bardwell scored in the 49th minute to tie the game 1-1, but the Tigers gave up the winning goal in the 63rd minute in the 2-1 loss.
East’s Carlos Smith scored the only goal of the game in the 54th minute of the second game of the day in their 1-0 win over the Tigers.
