The A-D-M wrestling team competed at the Raccoon River Conference meet in Boone on Feb. 1. The Tigers came out of the tournament with a third-place finish overall, and Zach Johnson (152) and Darold Baker (182) were crowned conference champions in their respective weight classes.
A-D-M coach Justin Schmauss said that the third-place finish for his team was good.
“I’m definitely not satisfied or happy with third place but with the team having three open weights and for as young as we are third place is good,” Schmauss said.
“We’re definitely a good tournament team. We only won one dual meet this whole year in the conference but that’s because we had so many open weights so then when we get into a place where people can go and they can progress on their own we do pretty well.”
The Tigers had open weights at 138 pounds, 145 pounds and 160 pounds.
After a first-round bye, Johnston defeated Carroll’s Jacob Maasen 5-2 and was crowned champion after beating Perry’s Seth Stetsel 7-2 in the finals.
“I expected him to win that match,” Schmauss said.
“He was a two seed but he was ranked ahead of that kid. He’s been wrestling ranked opponents all year long and and beating everybody basically that you put in front of the kid so he’s wrestling really well right now and it’s going to be exciting to see what he can do in the next couple of weeks.”
Baker started off with a bang beating Carroll’s Jeromie Wanser by fall 0:24 in. His second-round match, however, was much closer as he beat Boone’s Brice Wilson 4-3 before beating Carlisle’s Damon Piatt 8-1 in the finals winning the 182 pound championship.
The last time Baker and Piatt wrestled each other back on Jan. 21, Piatt won by fall.
“Darold Baker’s been wrestling awesome,” Schmauss said.
“He’s continued to improve and improve and improve each week so that was actually a surprise.”
Kyle Wilkerson placed third at 113 pounds, Trevor Harsh placed third at 132 pounds, Cole Bennett took second at 170 pounds, Hunter Gibson took third at 195 pounds, Zach Ostendorf took third at 220 pounds and Nathan Heath took second at 285 pounds.
In their final meet before the conference meet A-D-M fell at the hands of Grinnell in Pella by a score of 51-14. The Tigers lost three matches by fall and four more by forfeit.
Trevor Harsh, Nathan Heath and Kyle Wilkerson picked up the only wins for A-D-M against Grinnell.
Harsh won by technical fall against Grinnell’s Jake Staroska 16-1, Heath pinned Jacob Cline 0:21 in and Wilkerson beat Kaiden Gosselink 10-5.
