The Waukee girls’ cross country team came away with a big win to start the season at the Pella Invitational on Sept. 7.
The Warriors put their scoring five in the top 11 of the large-team division to beat Johnston handily, 31-88. The Warriors were led by junior Erika Lewis, who was second in the large-team division with a time of 15 minutes, 57 seconds. Rachel Brush (16:09), Kayla Sabotin (16:23) and freshman Maggie Laird (16:46) finished fifth, sixth and seventh, and Bri Young’s 11th-place finish in 16:55 locked in Waukee’s team score.
Also running for the Warriors were sophomore Jordan Allen, who was 13th in 17:06, and senior Jenny Brown, who finished 45th in 19:01.
Waukee races again on Thursday at Marshalltown, followed by a Sept. 17 trip to West Des Moines Valley.
