The season couldn’t have gotten off to a more intense start for the Waukee girls’ soccer team, who started the season ranked No. 9 after going 16-5 and making the state tournament last season.

The Warriors started their season on Tuesday with a match at West Des Moines Valley and the Warriors beat the Tigers 2-1 as the match came down to a shootout.

Waukee freshman Rebecca Corbett, who was subbed in in the match, scored the only goal during regulation for the Warriors and Tiger senior Mackenzie Main scored Valley’s only goal of the game.

It was another Waukee freshman who iced the game for the Warriors when Amy Wieland scored the game winner in the shootout to help the Warriors get off to a 1-0 start to the season. Waukee goalkeeper played 100 minutes and made six saves while allowing one goal in the match.

The Warriors return to action for the second match of the season against Urbandale, who defeated Des Moines East 4-0 on Tuesday, at Waukee Stadium on Friday. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.
