Warriors dominate at regional meet

Waukee swiped five of the top six individual places at a regional meet in Pleasant Hill on Monday, setting up a return to the state tournament.

The Warriors, who won the Class 4A championship last season, are on the prowl for a 5A title following a 38-stroke victory at Copper Creek Golf Course on Monday. Waukee shot a team score of 316, easily beating Southeast Polk (354) and Ankeny (372) for the top spot.

Kelsy Shay was the meet medalist with an 18-hole score of 77. Jasmine Wyzgowski was second with a 78, Payton Minear third with a 79, Paige Seiser fifth with an 82 and Caitie Oder sixth with an 83. Brittany Best’s 93 rounded out the card.

Waukee also captured the first Central Iowa Conference golf meet championship on May 16 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. Shay was medalist with a 77, Minear was third overall with a 77, Seiser was fifth with a 79, Best and Wyzgowski were ninth and 10th with 83s and Oder was 15th with an 87.

The Warriors will take part in the Class 5A state tournament May 28-29 at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora. The field there includes Cedar Falls, West Des Moines Valley, Southeast Polk, Dowling Catholic, Ottumwa, Pleasant Valley, and Dubuque.
