Tripp Kinney won medalist honors to lead Waukee to the team title at the 14-school Linn-Mar Invitational on Monday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
Kinney, a sophomore, carded a 1-under 71. Aaron DeNucci was third overall with a 73, followed by Parker Howe’s 76 and Connor Littlefield’s 79.
Waukee finished with a team score of 299, besting Cedar Rapids Kennedy (303), West Des Moines Valley (305) and Dowling Catholic (308) for the top spot.
“This was a chance for a lot of good teams to see how they stack up against teams from eastern and central Iowa early in the season,” said Waukee coach John Kotz, whose team won its second state championship in three seasons in 2012.
Hunters Ridge will also be the site of the Class 4A state golf meet on Oct. 11-12.
“We wanted an opportunity to play this year’s state tournament course in a tournament environment and see how it goes,” Kotz said. “Overall, I was pleased with our effort. We can clean some things up, but to break 300 on this course in the first tournament of the season is a great effort by our players.”
