Competing as tournament host, the Waukee boys’ swim team emerged with a third-place finish at the Central Iowa Metro League conference meet at the Waukee YMCA on Jan. 25.
The Warriors logged eight top-five finishes and racked up 333 points, trailing only Johnston (270 1/2) and Dowling Catholic (350).
Ankeny (242 1/2) and West Des Moines Valley (196 1/2) rounded out the top five.
“We were hoping to be in the top three, but it was a huge surprise to be that far ahead of Valley and Ankeny,” coach Dan Briggs said.
Leading the way for Waukee was sophomore Jack Scafuri, who captured two event victories. He recorded a 2-second margin of victory to win the 100-yard butterfluy over Fort dodge’s Rob Leigh in53.56 seconds, then held off Fort Dodge’s David Ruzicka for the top spot in the 100 backstroke in 54.42. Teammate Brett Shaw was third in the latter with a 56.31 time.
Jackson Kuhlers claimed third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.46, then followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:05.77. Both the 200 medley (Scafuri, Josh Rinderknecht, Shaw, Josh Waltman) and 400 freestyle (Shaw, Kuhlers, Zach Linder, Scafuri) relays placed fourth as well.
The Warriors traveled on Tuesday to a dual meet at Southeast Polk, the final tuneup before the district meet on Feb. 8 in Johnston. The field at Summit Middle School includes the top three conference finishers from last weekend, as well as Council Bluffs Lincoln/Jefferson, Marshalltown and three of the four Des Moines schools: East, Hoover/North and Lincoln.
