Warriors win big in season opener

The Waukee girls’ swim team opened the 2013 season in style on Tuesday with a commanding 146-37 victory over Indianola at the Waukee YMCA.

The Warriors won 11 of 12 events, including all three relays, including all three of the relays. Jenny Brown, Haley Stitz, Ellie Blazenko and Zoe Bussanmas won the 200-yard medley in 2:00.53; Olivia Crouse, Lindey Carlson, Camryn Somers and Bussanmas won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.96; and the 400 freestyle relay team of Maddie Gehrke, Bussanmas, Blazenko and Brown posted a 14-second margin of victory in 3:54.74.

Gehrke also won the 200 freestyle (1:59.77) and 400 freestyle (5:32.85). Somers won the 200 individual medley in 2:22.49 and 100 butterfly in 1:06.71, while Blazenko posted wins in the 50 freestyle (27.01) and 100 backstroke (1:06.11). Bussanmas won the 100 freestyle (57.91) and Jilian Loos won the diving competition with a score of 179.20.

Waukee returns to the pool Sept. 3 at Johnston, before returning to host Des Moines Hoover on Sept. 5.
