Waukee’s Kuethe takes sixth at state tennis meet

Waukee’s Kayla Kuethe made a repeat state tournament appearance this season.

After taking fourth place a season ago, she took sixth place at this year’s tournament.

Kuethe got off to a good start in the first round, defeating Ellie Anderson of Linn-Mar 6-1, 6-0 and advancing to the quarter finals. Jessica Pedersen proved to be too much for Kuethe in the quarterfinals, however, as Kuethe lost 1-6, 4-6.

Kuethe got back to winning in the consolation second and third rounds though as she defeated Kelly King of Cedar Rapids Washington 6-4, 6-0 in the consolation second round and then defeated Katie Melbourne of Pleasant Valley 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(4) in the consolation semifinals.

She matched up against Alex Kozlowski of Des Moines Roosevelt in the consolation finals for fifth place but fell 7-5, 3-6, 0-1(6) and settled for the sixth-place finish.

Kuethe qualified for the state tournament all four years of high school.
